David Cone is one of the most decorated pitchers in MLB history, having won five World Series and a Cy Young in 1994. During his years with the Mets and Yankees, Cone played with the likes of Darryl Strawberry, Wade Boggs, and rookies like Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter. He takes some time out of his busy schedule to chat with DD about his time in baseball and previews his new book, Full Count: The Education of a Pitcher.

On his Mets teammates struggles:

“Certainly some of them have turned a corner. Darryl Strawberry is doing very well as a motivational speaker and is doing some preaching as well. It was some of the greatest men I have ever been around. They were so hard-nosed, they played the game with so much vigor and toughness. Some of them are still struggling with addiction issues. I still worry about some of my teammates, but I love them all. The ’86 Mets are the gift that keeps on giving.”

On his most fun times as a player:

“Even my minor league days, in my book I talk about how much fun you had even though you made no money. Playing for the Mets, with that group of players in that era was certainly so much fun. And then on the field with the Yankees, we won four of of five World Series titles. i say off the field with the Mets and on the field with the Yankees.”
