Sports gambling has been sweeping the nation in recent years, with many states legalizing bets and adding casinos to capitalize on the craze. Indiana joined the party last week, and State Senator Mark Messmer is live with DD to discuss the bill. Messmer talks about the strategy behind it, provisions he wanted to add in, and what it means for the state moving forward.

On adding smartphone access to the bill:

“It was one of the hardest bills I had to work on. There was a lot of pushback. To get that done was not easy. If you have sports betting for the casinos, that would not be a wasted opportunity, but you would be missing the biggest potential financial impact by not having a mobile app featured to your sports betting.”

On Indiana’s decision to get this done quickly:

“We had put together proviisons for sports betting in prior years, but didn’t move any of the bills becuase the Supreme Court hadn’t weighed in yet on it. So we had a footprint somewhat established once the ruling came down. I attended quite a few gaming conferences to find out what other states were doing.”

As sports gambling becomes more prominent across the state, 1070 The Fan will keep you up-to-date with all the latest happenings!
