With just 676 total yards given up through their first three games, no other NFL defense has been as productive as the Indianapolis Colts. In fact, the next closest team isn’t even in the same ballpark. The Pittsburgh Steelers have surrendered 870 total yards, and only three other teams are at 1000 or less.
Heading into Week 4 against Nick Foles and the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, former Colts defensive back Darius Butler stopped by The Dan Dakich Show to offer his insight on what he has liked out of the Blue and White.
With starting cornerback Rock Ya-Sin sidelined due to an illness, it has been T.J. Carrie stepping up in his place. Carrie recorded one of the two Colts pick sixes off of Jets quarterback Sam Darnold in the Week 3 win at Lucas Oil Stadium. Butler has liked what he has seen out of Carrie, who signed with the Colts back in March after a stint with the Cleveland Browns.
“Carrie has been playing great and the whole defense has been playing great,” Butler said. “I would anticipate (Ya-Sin) getting reps, but I’m not sure if he gets his starting job back right out of the gate.”
Ya-Sin returned to full practice on Thursday, as did running back Nyheim Hines. Rookie wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. is still out with a calf injury.
Even with the early season injury bug, the Colts are rolling. Philip Rivers continues to perform right up to expectations, but the Bears will be a true test for Indianapolis according to Butler.
“It will be a better test than the last two weeks with Nick Foles in there, that defense, and the weapons that they bring,” Butler added.
In terms of where the Colts can truly go this season, it all comes down to the AFC South.
“They have all the makings to be a very good football team,” Butler explained. “You always look at your own division first as a player. They definitely look like they can be the best team in the (AFC South).
Kickoff from Soldier Field is set for 1 PM on Sunday.
