For as much praise as Indianapolis Colts GM Chris Ballard gets around town, you would think that the Blue and White are hanging up AFC South championship banners every season.

That’s obviously not the case.

Dan Dakich is a Ballard guy; He has liked him since he got to town. But for as little as the Colts have done in the postseason since that point, why give Ballard all the love?

Ballard’s second round picks haven’t been very good and there’s no division titles to show. Plus the 11-5 record this past year was with one of the easiest schedules in the league.

Gregg Doyel, the Sports Columnist for the Indianapolis Star, jumped on The Dan Dakich Show Tuesday and responded to this notion.

“From what he inherited, Ballard had to turn over the entire roster,” Doyel said. “The way the quarterback situation has unfolded for him going from Brissett, Luck, back to Brissett, Rivers, and now someone else is crazy.”

Few general managers in the NFL have gone through what Ballard has with QBs. Especially when your franchise quarterback retired two weeks before the season and left the team in shambles.

Still, is that worth giving him the benefit of the doubt?

“It’s like taking an AP class in high school,” Doyel added. “Whatever your GPA is you get one point higher. From what he has done with the Colts, you kind of have to give him the extra point because of the quarterback stuff. I think Ballard is really good but at some point we have to see something more.”

The spring of 2021 will be Ballard’s biggest test yet.

It’s on him to find both a quarterback and left tackle who can not only immediately gel with each other, but also eclipse what Philip Rivers and the 2020 team did.
