The Big Ten took another wild turn on Tuesday with the announcement of the cancellation between Michigan and Ohio State this Saturday.
In what was sure to be a season-impacting game that would potentially decide who is representing the East Division in the Big Ten Championship Game, we have reached a bit of a crossroads. The Indiana Hoosiers are now potentially in striking range to play at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 19.
Indiana head coach Tom Allen called into The Dan Dakich Show on Tuesday to give DD the latest from Bloomington. As usual with Coach Allen, he’s focused on what’s directly in front of him.
“We talked about how we have to do a better job on third down defense,” Allen said. “The bottom line is there’s a lot to work on. We have to continue running the football in an effective way. That creates our passing opportunities. I thought we were efficient in the red zone, but we have to get there more.”
The Hoosiers are set to take on Purdue on Saturday. But the Boilermakers cancelled practice on Tuesday to evaluate their latest batch of COVID-19 tests.
According to ESPN, if Purdue has to cancel Saturday’s game versus IU, the Big Ten could break protocol and move games around. Or they can potentially have a rematch between Ohio State and Indiana.
If the Big Ten does not reschedule games, Indiana could officially punch their ticket to playing for a conference title. Still, Allen pointed out to DD that you can’t look too far ahead, especially with COVID restrictions. It’s a day-to-day battle.
“You have to stay the course,” Allen added. “We’re one rough day away from being in trouble with all this stuff. It’s about constantly reminding ourselves about the protocols that we have in place and keeping trust that we’ll be healthy.”
