Two weeks ago, Anthony Castonzo hung up the cleats. Yesterday, Philip Rivers announced his retirement. And today, offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni left his post with the Indianapolis Colts to become the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Sirianni, who has been in Indianapolis since 2018, has been a mainstay with Frank Reich since their days with the San Diego Chargers.
Reich left the Eagles offensive coordinator position to become the Colts head man. Sirianni has now pulled the reverse.
ESPN’s Mike Wells dropped by The Dan Dakich Show on Thursday to give his look into the story. Wells told DD that he expected Sirianni to eventually become a head coach, but maybe not this soon.
“I knew he would be a future head coach but was surprised the Eagles went in this direction,” Wells said. “I like him a lot, but he has never called plays. I think we all thought that Matt Eberflus would be a head coach before Sirianni. But it will be interesting with that quarterback dilemma they have in Philly with Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts.”
The youth movement in the NFL is for real. Not necessarily from a player perspective, but more-so coaches.
More and more coaches getting hired nowadays fit the mold of being young and having huge upside. But like Sirianni, they may not have vast play calling experience.
It’s obvious that Chris Ballard has some shopping to do on the offensive side of the ball, but how should Reich fill Sirianni’s void?
“I would not be shocked if they kept everything in-house and together,” Wells added. “You have guys that you are very familiar with like wide receivers coach Mike Groh; Who took over as the OC in Philly after Frank left. And then there’s quarterbacks coach Marcus Brady, who has been with Reich since day one.”
Wells also brought up the idea of Doug Pederson coming to the 317. But would a Super Bowl winning head coach want to become an assistant under his old coordinator?
That would be something.
We said yesterday after Rivers’ retirement that this was already a massive off-season. Now it just got multiplied by 10.
