This sounds pretty convoluted, but absolutely nobody wanted the Baylor Men’s Basketball coaching job back in 2003.

Baylor was engulfed in a fiery and awful scandal involving a Bears player being convicted of murdering a teammate. The rabbit hole of lies and deception continued further and the program seemed doomed.

That’s until Scott Drew took a trip down to Waco.

The longtime resident of the Hoosier State saw something in the Lone Star State that so few did; The potential to grow a flower out of concrete.

Drew cultivated a heritage with the Bears that maybe no other coach could do over a period of 17 years. Now, the former Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother at Butler University can call himself a National Champ.

Coach Drew was kind enough to call into The Dan Dakich Show on Wednesday afternoon. He hasn’t gotten a ton of sleep since Monday. He had over 500 unread texts to reply to, but he’ll gladly accept that problem.

“We won it and by the time you got out of the stadium I had all these texts and emails and they all deserve a reply,” Drew said. “So you’re trying to get caught up with that and then it’s 7 A.M. and you’ve got The Today Show so that’s when coffee takes over. If God blesses you with that, you enjoy that problem.”

When God blesses you with the ability to blow out both Houston and Gonzaga in the Final Four and National Championship respectively in two days, you enjoy that too.

Baylor showed the country that the mid-season COVID pause did not define them. They were a resilient bunch who brought it every second, minute, half and game.

“After the Big-12 Tournament and each NCAA Tournament round you’re given a couple practice days and we really got back to where we were (before the pause),” Drew said. “Being hungry and finishing strong was really key to this team’s success and the players deserve all that credit.”

Drew has always believed in his players.

Whether they were strictly walk-ons when the program was dealing with the scandal, or they were top NBA draft prospects like Jared Butler or Davion Mitchell.

The greatest rebuild in College Basketball history has been completed. Next up?

Become a dynasty.
