Summer Safety Tips!

Summer is officially here. So how can you make sure you and your loved ones are safe while having fun? IN 911 has some tips.

Transcript: Indiana Statewide 911 Board's Summer Safety Tips

Look, we all know that summer is the best. Sunshine (hopefully it'll eventually stop raining), concerts, pool parties - it just doesn't get much better.

But with anything fun comes some danger, right? If anything happens while you're out having your summer fun and you need help, remember that IN 911 is there to help. And while "Voice Is Best", you can still text 911 in case of emergency.

Now while we have you, here's some tips to follow to keep you safe this summer presented by IN 911!

BEAT THE HEAT

This was a big theme here in Indy 5 years ago. Not necessarily because of the actual heat, but because the Pacers were in a battle with LeBron James' Miami Heat for a right to go to the NBA Finals.

That didn't end well. Don't wind up like the 2013-2014 Pacers.

How to beat the actual heat?

If you're experiencing headaches or dizziness, rapid heart rate, nausea or vomiting, fatigue or weakness, you should:

  • move into a shaded or air-conditioned area
  • drink water
  • apply wet towels to you or take a cold shower
FIREWORKS

4th of July is just around the corner. Fireworks will be flying constantly, and if you're at a party where they are setting them off, or you are setting them off yourself, they can be extremely dangerous. Just ask Jason Pierre-Paul

If you're getting your hands on them, you should:

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks
  • Older children should use them only under close adult supervision
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Anyone using fireworks or standing nearby should wear protective eyewear
  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands
  • Never light them indoors

A good bet is to just head out to a nice backyard or open field, plop down with the fam, and enjoy from afar.

MOSQUITOES

Is there anything worse? You're having an awesome time hanging out on the back deck, by the pool, waiting for the fireworks and BAM mosquitoes decide they can crash the party.

Not this summer. When they come around you should:

  • To prevent mosquito bites, use Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellant with DEET and wear long-sleeve shirts and long pants
  • Read product labels when using insect repellant and apply as directed
  • Do not leave doors or windows propped open
  • Once a week, scrub or empty planters, birdbaths, vases and flowerpot saucers; mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water
  • Use EPA-approved indoor and outdoor flying insect spray or foggers
  • Turn on air conditioning; mosquitoes prefer warm, damp and dark spaces

There ya go.

The big 3 of summer annoyances and worries isn't going to ruin your season this year. But just remember, if anything does go wrong, you can text IN 911 for help!
