Brad Stevens stepped away as head coach of the Boston Celtics and moved into a front office role with the franchise, but according to Mark Titus, Stevens was hoping to make Bloomington his home before getting voted down by his own family.
On Thursday’s Fan Morning Show, Kevin Bowen noted that on Titus’ podcast, Titus & Tate, the host noted that Stevens had the option to remain in Boston and work in the Celtics’ front office or move back to his native Indiana and take the head coaching vacancy at IU. Stevens’ supposedly sat down with his wife Tracy and two kids to vote where they wanted to go. Stevens was outvoted 3-1 for the family to remain in Boston.
As KB recounted the story, IndyStar reporter and fill-in co-host Gregg Doyel said he didn’t necessarily buy that Stevens wanted to go to Indiana but was shot down.
That job has probably a dream job of his for forever and he wanted it but said no because his wife and kids said no? If that’s true that’s true, as a family man, that’s exceptionally admirable, but that’s where I think that just can’t be.
Bowen noted that AD Scott Dolson’s wide-ranging head coaching search started as early as January and rumblings of interest in Stevens started early on with multiple rumors indicating that a formal offer had been made in the $70 million range. Stevens himself denied those rumors and the Hoosiers eventually would name Mike Woodson as head coach at the end of March 2021.
