NFL free agency is officially two months away, and it’s time to start talking about the possible, or unlikely, moves the Colts could make come March.
That’s exactly what The Fan Morning Show did with Stephen Holder from The Athletic on Wednesday morning.
Quarterback will obviously be the main storyline throughout the free agent and draft process, but maybe the second most pressing need is help at receiver for whoever will be slinging the pigskin for the Colts in 2020. The free agent market has some big names on it like AJ Green and Amari Cooper, but would the Colts actually stray away from their recent free agency plan of not spending?
“I like the free agent (wide receiver) class, but again my problem is they’re not the type of guys that the Colts tend to pursue,” Holder said.
“With Amari Cooper you’d have to decide whether you want to put $16 million a year into that guy. I think at his age there’s an argument to be made for it. It doesn’t sound like a move that the Colts make to be honest with you, but I would understand it.”
There is multiple really good things about Amari Cooper.
One: he is only 25 years old. That puts him into the prime of his career while also making you feel a little better about giving a guy a pricey four-year contract knowing that by the end of it he still won’t even be 30.
Two: his production speaks for itself. He has over 5,000 receiving yards since he was drafted in 2015 with 33 touchdowns. That would make him the first legitimate threat opposite T.Y. Hilton since Reggie Wayne in 2012.
With all that being said, it obviously means Cooper will demand a lot of cash this offseason. Now, it would all come down to how valuable Chris Ballard thinks a real playmaker on the outside is to this offense and this team.
Another possible free agent wide receiver name is still in house for the Colts. Devin Funchess will hit the market in March.
Would Ballard try to see if they could hit the reset button on Funchess after he was lost for the year with a broken collarbone?
“I do wonder though if Devin Funchess is someone they consider bringing back. I’m so curious about what Devin Funchess would have been. I don’t think he would have been a superstar, however, I do think what he brought was something they lacked.”
Maybe one of the positives now for the Colts losing Funchess in 2019 is his potential availability in 2020. One thing is for sure – the Colts need more playmakers on offense.
