It has taken five weeks for a quarterback controversy to ensue in Indianapolis.
Following a zero touchdown and two interception game against the Cleveland Browns, many are wondering around the city if Philip Rivers should continue playing as opposed to backup Jacoby Brissett.
Brissett has already been a full time starter for two years under Frank Reich. In 2017 while filling in for the injured Andrew Luck, he started 15 games with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Things got better in 2019 as he threw 18 TD’s with six picks in 15 starts.
But Rivers was brought in to solidify the quarterback position. So far, that hasn’t happened.
Michael Grady hopped on The Fan Morning Show on Tuesday to discuss what the Colts can do to get back on track, and if Brissett should be playing.
“I don’t think we’re going to see Jacoby for a while unless Philip throws some more horrific interceptions,” Grady mentioned. “Like interceptions that are so bad that nobody can defend them. And Frank Reich was doing some defending after last game, but if we were all in that position we would stick it out too.”
Rivers must perform in the next two games at home versus Cincinnati and on the road against Detroit. If he doesn’t, that’s when MG said the Colts may need to make a change.
“With the Bengals and Lions, they have pieces to at least give you a fight,” Grady said. “Those games may not be pretty, but have to be enough to justify Frank keeping Philip in the lineup. If you lose one or both of those games and Philip is awful, then you’re in a position where Frank can’t defend him. Then you have to put Jacoby in.”
The most important stretch of the season is coming up soon for the Blue and White. And all eyes will be on number 17 under center.
