ESPN NFL reporter Mike Wells joined Jeff & Big Joe this morning to discuss the Colts offseason plans.
Simply put, what will Chris Ballard do in the draft or free agency?
Wells said he better have an aggressive plan at quarterback.
“If I’m in charge I am going to see what it costs to get Teddy Bridgewater in town,” Wells told Jeff & Big Joe.
“I’m going to see if he’s trying to break the bank. If it’s not too much, I’m bringing Teddy Bridgewater in to be my starting quarterback. If I can’t afford him, I am going to trade up…I am going to see what it is going to take with my draft picks to trade up high enough to select Tua. If he’s not ready to go, I will go with Jacoby Brissett and let Tua continue to get healthy. If he’s healthy then he’ll come in to challenge Jacoby for the starting quarterback spot. I am going to do what I can to really push the envelope for Jacoby Brissett as the starting quarterback.”
Whoa.
That is really aggressive.
Bridgewater is going to be a hot commodity this offseason after filling in swimmingly for Drew Brees during the Saints 2019 campaign. Brees went down with a thumb injury in Week 2, and from that point on Bridgewater went 5-0 as the Saints starter with wins at Seattle, vs. Dallas, and at Chicago. Bridgewater completed 68{e5a2c78333cd2b046c434d71e2429f0c16f5e72c19badef2b307d6f8033092f8} of his passes for 1,384 yards and nine touchdowns during his time as a starter.
Couple that with already being a first round pick + playoff trips during his time in Minnesota and quarterback needy teams will be salivating for Bridgewater thinking now is his time to lead his own franchise as the starter.
Would Chris Ballard sign likely his future as the Colts GM on Teddy? Feels like he, a big draft guy, would be more inclined to do something like Wells’ second option and that’s trade up to draft your future face of the franchise.
But if he did in fact want to go the proven veteran route, how would you try to sell a guy like Bridgewater on coming to Indy?
“I’m selling him on the O-line assuming Anthony Castonzo doesn’t retire. The O-line is in tact,” said Wells.
“You have a 1,000 yard rusher in Marlon Mack. You have a versatile Darren Sproles type back in Nyheim Hines, and I am going to get me some wide receivers…I’m putting skilled positions around Teddy Bridgewater, but I’m really, really pushing that offensive line.”
