Recap: Warren Central Survives Scare at Lawrence North

The Warriors overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit to put themselves in position to win at least a share of the MIC title next week.

INDIANAPOLIS – The team chemistry and trust that Warren Central has built over the last five months was pushed to the limits on Friday night.

For 47 minutes, the Lawrence North Wildcats were the better team over Warren Central, but there’s a reason coaches use the cliché 48 minutes when describing what it takes to win on Friday nights.

The hopes and dreams that Lawrence North would pull off the marquee win of the season all disappeared in a matter of seconds when wide receiver Demarcus Brown broke free for a go-ahead touchdown with a minute to go in the game.

Despite falling into a 14-0 deficit, there was no doubt on the Warren Central sideline that they would pull together and come away with the win.

“There was no getting on each other (for making bad plays). We knew we had to stay together,” said senior defensive end Marquise Cross.

The Warriors stormed out of the gates to start the second half, thanks to a 53-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cobe Moore. Yet the Wildcats kept pace with Warren Central’s rally in the second half, thanks to three field goals by junior kicker Zach Lotts.

With under two minutes left in the game and Warren Central looking at an 89-yard drive to take the lead, Lawrence North was feeling pretty good about their chances. However, with the game on the line, Warren Central head coach Jayson West turned to his senior quarterback to complete the comeback.

Perhaps no player has grown more throughout the season than the quarterback himself. “I remember after the Carmel scrimmage I was struggling just to put some touch on the ball. I was overthrowing guys like crazy,” Moore said after the game. Now, he’s confident he can do it all. “I’m throwing on the run, I’m stepping into all my throws, I’m scrambling out of the pocket when I need to. I’m taking my time, and not rushing when I have to and not forcing anything.”

That development was evident as Moore rolled to the left side and found an open Brown for the 44-yard go-ahead score.

Of course, a ton of credit goes to Brown himself, as he had to come back to the ball after getting separation at the last second. “I was seeing drop coverage… and it was just one-on-one coverage with the safety and I just had to make a play,” Brown said.

Brown might have not been able to break free had it not been for a key block by teammate Derek Allen Jr. “My brother came all the way all the field for me! That’s that brotherly love we’ve got for each other. I just wanted to put it all (on the field),” Brown.

A year removed from having one of the most prolific individual performances in program history, the Warriors have found out how to play winning team football. It hasn’t always been pretty, just look at the underwhelming performances against Louisville Trinity in week two and at Ben Davis a couple weeks ago. But at this point in the season, the Warriors have created a team-first identity. With this established identity, the Warriors once again find themselves on the cusp of taking at least a share of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference title next Friday at Carmel.
