Mother Nature dominated the storyline at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday during the GMR Grand Prix. The scheduled 85-lap race was cut short at its 2-hour time limit due to a fair share of incidents and the expected rain on Saturday afternoon.
The eventual winner, Colton Herta, joined Kevin Bowen and Jake Query on Monday’s edition of Kevin and Query and detailed why specifically it was one of the toughest races of his career.
“It was such a long race because it was a rain race so it took longer to complete the laps, so it went to a timed race. In that time it went from dry to wet and wet to dry so we had all sorts of different conditions. You had to be so focused. It’s so difficult when the track conditions are always changing. Especially going from dry to wet on those slick tires. It was a lot of fun to be in the car that day, but it was very stressful because you didn’t know what was going to happen because there was such low grip.”
Herta’s victory is the seventh of his career and his first Indy Car Series win of the season. While it’s not a foregone conclusion, there is a recent history of drivers winning the GMR Grand Prix at the beginning of May and then following it up with a win at the Indianapolis 500. Both Will Power and Simon Pagenaud did it in 2018 and 2019.
