Quarterback is the most important position in professional sports and there isn’t an exception to that rule here in Indianapolis. The man under center for the Indianapolis Colts is at the heart of all offseason discussions for the blue and white. Will Carson Wentz be the starting quarterback when the 2022 NFL season begins? The general consensus seems to be no, he won’t be.

Assuming Jim Irsay and Chris Ballard want to move on from Wentz after one season, the question now becomes, “Which NFL team would even want Wentz and what else would you have to throw in to get a quarterback you feel like is better than the current Colts signal caller”? It’s a fair question because, let’s face it, Wentz doesn’t exactly have overwhelming trade value right now. But you know who does? Quenton Nelson. Jonathan Taylor. Darius Leonard. There isn’t a team in the NFL who wouldn’t like to have one of those guys on their team. Unfortunately, the Colts might be in a position where they have to part ways with one of their big three if they want to find another quarterback.

So, what about Derek Carr? If the Raiders are interested in trade talks with the Colts, but they want one of the three best players in Indianapolis along with Wentz, is it worth it? Do the Colts take a hit elsewhere just so they can improve at the all-important quarterback position? Here’s what Jake Query thinks:

“He [Nelson] is a wonderful player, but they have bigger needs elsewhere that are far more critical than guard…their best course of action is addition by subtraction and that subtraction is Carson Wentz.”

The Colts are between a rock and a hard place, quite frankly. They have a quarterback that they don’t want because of his play on the field and no one else in the league thinks he has trade value. So, if the Colts want to move on from Wentz, and, more specifically, want to replace him with a quarterback they actually have faith in, it’s probably going to have to come in a trade where they also say goodbye to a really good football player.
