INDIANAPOLIS – We are less than two months away from NFL free agency beginning.

Over the next few weeks, you will start to see some teams take care of unrestricted free agents that they want to bring back.

For the Colts, they have 12 unrestricted free agents, with not a lot of guarantees on who to definitely bring back.

Devin Funchess Free Agent Watch

Chris Ballard has made it very clear that he needs to add more playmaking to the Colts offense.

That means at wide receiver, where the position (again) under performed last year.

A broken collarbone to Devin Funchess (which splintered in 5 spots) in the 4th quarter of the season opener didn’t help things.

As Ballard put it, ‘bad luck’ ended Funchess’ contract year before the first game was over.

Funchess caught 3 balls for 32 yards in that opener.

Is a freak injury really enough for the Colts to say ‘we are moving on?’ Before that, Funchess appeared to be a guy Frank Reich liked and someone the Colts wanted to use a good amount.

Even though Jacoby Brissett and Funchess didn’t have a great connection in offseason work, you didn’t see the abundance of drops from Funchess, which was a big worry after his 4 years in Carolina.

Of course, all free agents discussions go down a two-way street.

Does the 25-year-old Funchess want to stay in Indy (with Brissett under center?) on another short-term deal? That’s not the same situation as the Andrew Luck-led offense that Funchess initially signed with last March.

If the Colts don’t bring back Funchess, they will likely need to go invest the same sort of resources into wideout that they did last offseason (when they paid more than $7 million for Funchess and then used a 2nd round draft pick on Parris Campbell).

This will be an interesting free agency to watch.
