Any Remaining Colts Contract Extensions In 2019?

With Training Camp about to start for the Colts, are there any remaining contract extensions to get done?

INDIANAPOLISChris Ballard said some extensions for current Colts could be possible this summer.

He followed through on that, in extending punter Rigoberto Sanchez and long snapper Luke Rhodes.

But what about some of the bigger names heading into contract years?

Anthony Castonzo, 30, is the obvious name to watch for an extension.

The Colts love Castonzo. He talks like a guy eager to be completely healthy, still with several years of ahead of him and there’s no young emerging left tackle on the roster.

All of those factors play into the Colts wanting to bring Castonzo back. Although, it’s not a must to get it done before the start of the regular season. It is still something that could be crossed off the list.

After Castonzo, you could make some extension case for upcoming free agents Jacoby Brissett, Jack Doyle, Eric Ebron or Jabaal Sheard. But you could also make some strong cases on waiting to extend any of those guys.

Brissett wants to compete for a starting job, which isn’t going to happen in Indianapolis.

The tight end position could look really different in 2020 depending on what Doyle shows in his return from injury, and then how consistent Ebron is in 2019. Ebron could be headed for a pretty significant pay day next spring, too.

Sheard, 30, has several intriguing young names behind him.

You also have Ryan Kelly (under contract through 2020), who appears to be heading towards a second NFL contract with the Colts.

And thinking about a third contract for T.Y. Hilton (signed through 2020) and Andrew Luck (signed through 2021) are much bigger decisions that Ballard can’t forget about.

Currently, the Colts are scheduled to have a little than $50 million in cap space next year, which ranks 5th in the NFL.

A chunk of that number is likely headed to retaining some of their own.
