INDIANAPOLIS – It is the first of many versions over the next four months.
The Colts have their first complete 90-man roster of the offseason, after a 10-man draft class and 10-man undrafted free agent group have been assembled.
This roster will be fluid over the next few months, before Training Camp starts in late July. Teams can maintain a 90-man roster through the entire preseason, before final cuts to 53 are due at the end of August.
Below is a breakdown of the current 90-man roster, with the second number in parenthesis indicating how many players at that position the Colts kept after their final roster cuts in September 2018:
Quarterbacks (3/2): Jacoby Brissett, Andrew Luck, Phillip Walker
Bowen’s Analysis: The draft has come and gone and Brissett is still a Colt. The full expectation is Brissett will play out the final year of his rookie contract in Indianapolis.
Running Backs (5/4): Nyheim Hines, Marlon Mack, Spencer Ware, Jordan Wilkins, Jonathan Williams
Bowen’s Analysis: The addition of Ware has upped the quality competition in this group. It will be hard to cut this group lower than 4.
Wide Receiver (13/5): Deon Cain, Parris Campbell*, Ashton Dulin*, Reece Fountain, Devin Funchess, Penny Hart*, T.Y. Hilton, Krishawn Hogan, Steve Ishmael, Marcus Johnson, Zach Pascal, Chester Rogers, Jordan Veasy
Bowen’s Analysis: Talk about some serious competition among this bunch. Do the Colts keep 5 or 6 wideouts and who will make a necessary presence on special teams?
Tight Ends (7/3): Mo Alie-Cox, Billy Brown, Jack Doyle, Eric Ebron, Hale Hentges*, Gabe Holmes, Ross Travis
Bowen’s Analysis: With no draft picks at tight end, the Colts have their 3 main returners from last season, plus the intriguing Travis coming off a torn ACL.
Offensive Linemen (15/10): C/G-Josh Andrews, OT-Jackson Barton*, C/G-Evan Boehm, T-Anthony Castonzo, G/T-Le’Raven Clark, T-Antonio Garcia, OG-Mark Glowinski, T/G-Joe Haeg, C-Ryan Kelly, G-Quenton Nelson, C/G-Javon Patterson*, G-William Poehls, G/T-Braden Smith, T-J’Marcus Webb, T-De’Ondre Wesley
Bowen’s Analysis: Besides Matt Slauson, this group returns everyone from last season and has added a pair of seventh-round picks in Barton and Patterson.
Defensive Linemen (15/10): DT/DE-Denico Autry, DE-Gerri Green*, DT/DE-Margus Hunt, DE-Justin Houston, DE-Jegs Jegede*, DT/DE-Tyquan Lewis, DE-Al-Quadin Muhammad, DT-Johnny Robinson*, DE-Carroll Phillips, DE-Jabaal Sheard, DT-Sterling Shippy*, DT-Grover Stewart, DT-Jordan Thompson*, DE-Kemoko Turay, DT-Jihad Ward
Bowen’s Analysis: While the interior of this group lacks a true wide body, besides Stewart, this is still a pretty deep position group. Green was the lone draft pick for this bunch. With the Colts having more quality bodies at linebacker this year, the D-line group might be trimmed by a number, compared to last year, come final cuts.
Linebackers (10/6): Matthew Adams, Ben Banogu*, Zaire Franklin, Darius Leonard, Skai Moore, Bobby Okereke*, EJ Speed*, Ahmad Thomas, Tre Thomas*, Anthony Walker
Bowen’s Analysis: You have 7 Chris Ballard draft picks among this group. Special teams needs and having a guy like Banogu who can play some defensive end is a reason why this group could rise to 7 LBs on the final roster. That’s a number Ballard mentioned after the draft.
Cornerbacks (11/6): Jalen Collins, Pierre Desir, Nate Hairston, D.J. Killings, Chris Milton, Kenny Moore, Jamal Peters*, Shakai Taylor*, Marvell Tell*, Quincy Wilson, Rock Ya-Sin*
Bowen’s Analysis: This is another group that sees strong retention from 2018, plus some bolstering via the draft and undrafted class. Some notable names are going to be fighting for a roster spot.
Safeties (7/4): Matthias Farley, Clayton Geathers, Malik Hooker, Derrick Kindred, Roland Milligan, George Odum, Khari Willis*
Bowen’s Analysis: One would think this group keeps at least 4 names. With Hooker and Geathers healthy this offseason, it might be a bit harder for some of the depth guys to make a really strong impression, as opposed to opportunities in previous offseasons.
Specialists (4/3): K-Cole Hedlund*, LS-Luke Rhodes, P-Rigoberto Sanchez, K-Adam Vinatieri
Bowen’s Analysis: This group returns in-tact for a third straight season, with the addition of Hedlund as an extra leg to rest the 46-year-old Vinny during the offseason.
