INDIANAPOLIS – It doesn’t take a football junkie to see a lot is at stake when the 6-4 Colts take on the 6-4 Texans this Thursday in Houston.

That’s obvious with two teams tied atop the AFC South, and just 6 games remaining in the regular season.

Behind a 30-23 victory in Week Five, the Colts have a precious early head-to-head tiebreaker over the Texans.

If you were going to pick, Thursday’s game probably means even slightly more to the Texans, because they are on the short end of the early tiebreaker. Although some might say the Colts really need it with some not so favorable head-to-head tiebreakers in going up against other teams in the Wild Card mix.

But let’s make no mistake about---this is a monumental game for both teams.

Currently, the Colts have a 54 percent chance of making the playoffs.

With a win on Thursday, those odds jump to 82 percent, with the Colts a heavy favorite to win the AFC South. A victory would give the Colts a virtual two-game lead over the Texans, thanks to securing that head-to-head tiebreaker with a season sweep over Houston.

With a loss on Thursday, the playoffs odds for the Colts would drop to 35 percent, and just a 19 percent to win the division. The Texans would have a one-game lead over the Colts. Splitting the head-to-head matchups would lead to going to divisional record as the next tiebreaker (both teams would be 3-1 under this tiebreaker). So common games is the next tiebreaker, and the Texans are currently two games up on the Colts, thanks to wins over the Chargers and Raiders. The next tiebreaker would be conference record, and the Texans have a comfortable two-game lead there, too.

So, in just this one game, the Colts have a 47 percent swing in playoff chances.

Yeah, this is a big one.
