Consistency The Key For Marlon Mack Taking Another Jump

INDIANAPOLIS – When you look back on Marlon Mack’s second NFL season, there were more than just a few moments of tremendous play.

Part of that is why the Colts once again bypassed serious off-season resources into the running back position, sticking with Mack as their definite ‘feature’ back.

A nagging hamstring injury limited Mack to just one appearance in the first five weeks of the season.

But once he returned in Week Six, and played the rest of the season, Mack went on a very impressive run. His 874 rushing yards from mid-October through the rest of the season was the 4th most in the NFL.

In total, Mack finished the last season with 75.7 rushing yards per game, which was good for 6th in the NFL.

But the 5 guys above Mack on that list all played at least 14 games.

That’s one of the missing elements in Mack’s game going into his third NFL season.

Besides durability, a difficult task for any starting running back to truly achieve, the consistency in Mack and the Colts entire run game is a focus for 2019.

Including the playoffs, Mack played in 14 of 18 games last season.

His yards per game had a really a wide discrepancy.

-6 Games of < 50 yards

-5 Games of > 115 yards

-3 Games between 50 and 115 yards

It was very feast or famine for Mack in the rushing yards department last season.

When Mack himself evaluates his game from last year, he points to something after contact that needs to improve, in order for him to reach the Pro Bowl potential that has been seen.

“Personally, just hitting the hole more, getting through it, bursting through,” Mack says. “I could get better at picking up my feet. I fell a couple times – shoe tackles. That’s something I can definitely get better at.”

And if Mack does that, along with staying healthy, some accolades could be coming his way in 2019.
