INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts Defensive Rookie of the Year will miss his second straight year of OTAs and minicamp.
Darius Leonard underwent an ankle procedure last week, which is expected to sideline him for the next six weeks.
Chris Ballard offered that news on Tuesday night, while he broke down film of his 2019 draft picks.
In 2018, Leonard played through an ankle injury, rocking a boot at times during the practice week and missing a Week Five contest with the Patriots. Leonard even had some rest days from practice, too, in 2018. Ballard said on Tuesday that Leonard’s procedure was to ‘clean up a little spot’ which gave the All-Pro linebacker some issues earlier this spring when the Colts got back together.
Here are some other injury updates from Ballard on guys who could be out/limited this spring:
–Deon Cain (knee): It was an early August ACL injury for Cain last year. The Colts expect him to be cleared for Training Camp and to not be on the physically unable to perform list when the regular season begins.
–Jack Doyle (hip/kidney): Off-season hip surgery for Doyle has him trending more towards a Training Camp return guy. Ballard did say the ‘weight mass’ for Doyle is starting to get back to a normal level.
–Eric Ebron (groin): In early April, Ebron had surgery on his groin. Ballard said Ebron would be limited the rest of the spring. The tight end played through a variety of injuries last year.
–Clayton Geathers (knee): The Colts want to look out for Geathers this spring and could limit him on the practice field, after the safety missed ample practice time last year.
–T.Y. Hilton (ankle): Even though Hilton has returned from high and low ankle sprains late last year, the Colts want to give their veteran receiver some more rest time here in the spring.
–Malik Hooker (foot): Hooker is full-go this spring.
–Ross Travis (knee): A late August ACL injury last preseason should have the tight end cleared for Training Camp.
–Anthony Walker: While a body part wasn’t disclosed for Walker’s absence right now, Ballard mentioned him as a guy who could be limited for OTAs and minicamp.
OTAs will begin for the Colts this coming Tuesday, with the offseason program ending on June 13, following a mandatory three-day minicamp.
