Jim Irsay On Adam Vinatieri: “It’s A Concern”

The Colts will be evaluating their kicker situation on Monday. What did Jim Irsay have to say about Adam Vinatieri missing two extra points in Sunday’s comeback win over the Titans?

INDIANAPOLIS – Was Sunday the final time we see Adam Vinatieri in a Colts uniform?

Or, even, ever on the NFL field?

It appears a decision on those questions will be coming very soon for the Colts.

Following Sunday’s first victory of the 2019 season, one ugly cloud remained for the Colts and that was with Adam Vinatieri missing two extra points.

In his last 5 games, Vinny has now missed 7 kicks inside of 35 yards, which includes 5 missed extra points.

Sunday’s misses, which came after Vinny first connected on a perfect extra point in the first quarter, was a duck hook to the left, after holder Rigoberto Sanchez corrected an errant snap from Luke Rhodes. Vinny’s second miss was pushed to the right, bouncing off the upright and back onto the field.

“It’s a concern,” Jim Irsay acknowledged after the win in Nashville.

And the Colts, along with Vinny, will address that concern on Monday.

According to Irsay, Chris Ballard has been working on ‘the mechanics’ with Vinatieri this past week. It’s not known if those ‘mechanics’ are more so about Vinny’s immediate future with the Colts, or actually kicking technique.

“We’ll talk and we try to take emotion out of big decisions,” Irsay said after the game. “You try to make them, as much as you can, from a really intelligent point of view. I know Chris Ballard all week has been working on the mechanics with Adam and we’ll see where we are at. I just told Chris in there, ‘Watch the film, let things calm down and on Monday we will see where we are at.’

“I love Adam. His great, great grandfather survived (General) Custer’s last stand so this is a man of very tough cloth. I know all our fans, like I, hurt with Adam. No one hurts more than Adam does. It breaks my heart to see it because I know how hard he works. Of course, it’s a concern. I can’t lie to you guys. Anyone would tell you it’s a concern, Adam, Coach, Chris. Yeah it’s a concern. This league is professional football. We all have to produce. The expectation is to win when you are a professional, so we have to figure out where we are at and see where Chris and Coach thinks the best (decision is).”

Vinny told reporters after Sunday’s game that he would talk on Monday, even though that is the mandatory day off for players, with no scheduled media availability for players.

These kicking issues for Vinny are deeper than just the first two games of the 2019 season.

The Colts altered Vinny’s practice schedule this week, once they spotted a technique flaw that needed to be corrected after the season opener, in which the NFL’s all-time leading scorer missed three kicks.

More kicking issues from Vinny on Sunday almost cost the Colts a second straight game.

In Vinny’s last 5 games played, he’s missed 5 extra points (9-of-14) and 3 field goals (3-of-6).

The missed FGs have been from 44, 29 and 23 yards, along with the handful of 33-yard extra points missed.

Depending on what happens Monday, the next media availability for players is Tuesday, with the Colts returning to practice on Wednesday.
