Will The Colts Continue Their Streak Of An Undrafted Free Agent Making The Roster?

The Colts currently have 7 undrafted free agents on their 90-man roster. Will any make the 53-man roster?

INDIANAPOLISIs this the year the streak finally comes to an end?

It’s definitely possible.

The Colts have gone 20 straight years with an undrafted free agent making the team’s Week 1 roster.

But thanks to improved depth on the 90-man roster, and a smaller amount of undrafted free agents this year, it’s difficult to find an obvious candidate to have that streak continue.

Here’s a look at the Colts’ 7 undrafted free agents currently on the roster and their hopes at defying the odds:

  • WR-Ashton Dulin (Malone): Dulin has a very decorated collegiate resume in the Division II ranks. He led all receivers, including FBS, FCS, DII or DIII with 194.7 all-purpose yards per game last season. But he’s at an incredibly crowded position with the Colts, with possibly just 1 open spot for 7 or 8 guys.

  • WR-Penny Hart (Georgia State): An injury kept the smaller Hart off the field during the entire spring. We know the depth at wide receiver isn’t in Hart’s favor. He must bring an invaluable special teams element to the table in order to make the team.

  • K-Cole Hedlund (North Texas): Unless Adam Vinatieri’s right leg falls off, Hedlund will not make this streak continue to a 21st season.

  • TE-Hale Hentges (Alabama): It’s the deepest position group on the roster, but Hentges might have the best shot of any UDFA. Now, the odds still aren’t great, but Hentges does bring a strong blocking element to the game, which is something the Colts used last year with Ryan Hewitt. Does Frank Reich want to find a way for such a player again in 2019?

  • DT-Sterling Shippy (Alcorn State): Initially, Shippy wasn’t an undrafted free agent for the Colts. But the 5-11, 283-pound defensive tackle is on the 90-man roster now with an interesting looking frame at that position. The Colts like their defensive tackle depth though with Grover Stewart, Tyquan Lewis and Jihad Ward, behind Denico Autry and Margus Hunt.

  • CB-Shakial Taylor (Kansas): The Colts have churned through several undrafted corners this offseason. But Taylor has made it through. Numbers are not in his favor though, with two other corners (both drafted) ahead of him on the depth chart.

  • LB-Tre Thomas (Colorado State): From a numbers standpoint, Thomas might have one of the better chances to make the team, of anyone on this list. How the Colts figure out their final few linebacker spots is anyone’s guess. Thomas must deliver on special teams to sneak his way onto the 53-man roster.
