Pacers Sign Domantas Sabonis To Four-Year Contract Extension

On Monday afternoon, the Indiana Pacers came to a contract extension with big man Domantas Sabonis. What does this mean for Sabonis and the Pacers?

INDIANAPOLIS – The old saying of ‘deadlines spur action ‘held true for the Indiana Pacers and Domantas Sabonis.

Less than 2 hours away from a rookie contract extension deadline on Monday, the Pacers and Sabonis agreed to a new 4-year deal, which will keep the young big man under team security through the 2023-24 season.

The deal is reportedly worth $77 million guaranteed, with incentives that could earn Sabonis has much as $85, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

On paper, the deal is pretty similar to the 4-year extension by Myles Turner from last year, which was for the same length and up to $80 million.

Even though the Pacers reportedly had Sabonis involved in trade talks with other teams over the weekend, this move makes sense in several areas.

For one, it gives Sabonis an increased, and deserved, pay day, which actually makes him a bit easier to move, if a trade does develop down the road. Sabonis is making just $3.5 million this season, in the final year of his rookie contract.

Instead of Sabonis being a restricted free agent next summer (had this October 21st deadline not been met), this contract has Indiana looking pretty good on the contract books for the next few years.

Now, all of the Pacers’ key starters and reserves are under contract for multiple years.

Take a look at Indiana’s starting 5 (with Oladipo healthy) and their contract situations:

  • PG-Malcolm Brogdon under contract through 2022-23
  • SG-Victor Oladipo under contract through 2020-21
  • SF-T.J. Warren under contract through 2021-22
  • PF-Domantas Sabonis under contract through 2023-24
  • C-Myles Turner under contract through 2022-23

For a small market team, keeping a young emerging talent, who has shown All-Star quality potential, is a smart move.

And, like the Pacers did this summer, they continue to keep their important core on a similar trajectory from an age/contract standpoint.

The Pacers can now move forward experimenting if this new frontcourt movement of Sabonis/Turner can work, while also knowing they have an attractive trade piece, especially if rookie Goga Bitadze shows the ability to contribute early.

Indiana will open up its 2019-20 season on Wednesday night versus the Pistons.
