INDIANAPOLIS – Ask any Colts fan who the breakout player for the 2021 season is and they will all most likely have the same answer: Michael Pittman Jr. After a rookie campaign that showed flashes, the 2nd round 2020 pick out of USC has exploded to become the undeniable WR #1 of the future for the Colts. Through 9 games Pittman has already surpassed his rookie season in all major statistical categories with 50 receptions, 658 yards, and 5 TD’s.

The last time JMV talked to Michael Pittman Jr. was in March and they talked about if he sets goals for himself each season, now halfway through the season, JMV wanted to know how he was doing on those goals he set last March:

“I’d say I’m a little off of halfway. I set very high goals, goals that most people probably would have laughed at if I made them public last March. They’re very lofty goals that I think I can reach so I’m about halfway for this season.”

The 2020 NFL Draft was widely regarded as extremely deep at the WR position. The Colts took Pittman Jr with the #34 overall pick behind other receivers Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, Ceedee Lamb, Jalen Reagor, Justin Jefferson, Brandon Aiyuk, and Tee Higgins. Does he keep up with and compare himself to the receivers drafted before him?:

“I don’t really watch them to measure myself against them but I like watching them to see what they’re doing and take some of their moves that I can use. It’s also just fun to watch them ball out because I’m still friends with a lot of them.”

It has only been 1.5 seasons but the Colts have to be ecstatic with what they’ve seen from their two 2nd round 2020 Draft picks in Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr to be building blocks for the offense for years to come.
