Jonathan Taylor has kept all of his touchdown footballs throughout his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts.
This past Sunday, he was able to take home two from The Entertainment Capital of the World. In his first multi-touchdown game, Taylor carried the Colts along with T.Y. Hilton to the big win over the Raiders.
The former Wisconsin Badger has at least 90 rush yards in his last three games, and broke a three game skid without a touchdown with his two against Las Vegas. When starter Marlon Mack went down early on in the season, Taylor was put in a tough spot for a rookie in becoming the primary ball carrier.
He’s still just 21-years-old, but man does he look good. Taylor jumped on The Ride with JMV on Thursday to discuss his first campaign in the 317.
“(The recent surge) has been from the amount of repetition and having a good understanding of what set we’re running,” Taylor said. “You don’t really realize how important the off-season reps are like rookie mini camp until you don’t have it. Then there’s a lot of things you have to learn quickly on the fly.”
It’s hard for any rookie to start in the NFL; Not to mention when you have guys like J.J. Watt or Myles Garrett on the other side of the line.
It never hurts either for a rookie running back to have a future hall-of-fame quarterback next to them. Taylor told JMV that he has learned immensely from Philip Rivers over the course of this year.
“He knows so much and also has 17 years of experience so he knows exactly how to put us in a position for success,” Taylor added. “It took a little bit to get used to the audibles. But now I realize and appreciate that not every quarterback can do that. I’m very fortunate to have a legend like him on my team.”
Taylor and the offensive core are set to matchup against Watt and the Houston Texans for the second time in three weeks this Sunday. Frank Reich has talked about how difficult it is to sweep a divisional opponent, especially when you’re in the middle of a playoff race.
