If the Indianapolis Colts want Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers or Carson Wentz, they’ll need to pony up big in a trade.

Any trade would probably include the Blue and White’s 2021 first round pick. They’ll select at #21 this year. But as much as trading for a quarterback may be necessary, they have to address the left tackle position too.

Following Anthony Castonzo’s retirement, Indianapolis was without a LT, QB, and offensive coordinator until yesterday.

Marcus Brady is the new OC on Frank Reich’s staff. He’ll already have quite the task of once again building around a new quarterback. If Indianapolis does trade that first rounder, would they still want to draft a LT, sign one, or something else?

We’ve heard all the chatter of Quenton Nelson possibly being the solution. We even saw him play there at times this season. But the question is if he would be sustainable.

Rick Venturi made his return to The Ride with JMV on Monday. The color analyst for the Colts Radio Network told JMV that sliding Nelson to the left side could determine his ceiling.

“I tend to sense that the Colts have a hesitancy to moving Nelson over,” Venturi said. “If he is a generational player, which I hear 24 hours a day, you’re only moving him out one spot and it’s a matter of handling angles. If he can’t do it, he’s not a generational player. The best thing they can do is solve the left tackle spot from the inside without any investment.”

The former Colts interim head coach has studied draft boards of the past and determined that the most players selected in the top-10 have been quarterbacks, edge rushers, and left tackles. If the Colts trade #21, the ability to snag the guy they want gets even tougher.

Chris Ballard has multiple massive decisions to make in a short matter of time. But none are bigger than the guy he chooses to lead the offense, plus whoever will protect his blind side.
