Take it from Indianapolis Colts radio analyst Rick Venturi himself.
He loves the 2021 NFL Draft class for many reasons. But one reason in particular? The deep threats that are available.
The talented trio of LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase, Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith, and fellow Bama wide-out Jaylen Waddle will headline the receiver core.
It’s obvious that the Colts must address the left tackle or edge rush positions early on in this year’s draft. But eventually, Carson Wentz will need another weapon.
That’s what Venturi and JMV discussed on Monday afternoon. The former Colts head man provided over an hour of pre-draft analysis.
“It is by far the best position in this draft,” Venturi said. “In my book, there are seven blue chippers, which means first-round draft picks. Rondale Moore is a unique guy, but he’s not a blue chipper. He’s definitely a playmaker. In terms of the wide receiver position, everybody talks about the big three. They all have great talent and are definitely top-15 picks.”
Let’s be honest.
Indianapolis will not be the future home of anyone in that three-headed monster at the top. But you don’t expect them to be here.
Depending on what the Colts do in round number one, would a receiver in the 2nd or 3rd round be viable?
“To me receivers now contribute quicker,” Venturi added. “Somebody told me when I was a young, rookie coach in the NFL that when you draft early, you draft someone who puts it in the end zone or somebody who knocks the quarterback down.”
Round one commences on Thursday night.
