Following a successful 2020 season which saw Indiana finish the year 6-2, Head Coach Tom Allen and Hoosier fans everywhere had high expectations for the 2021 season. QB Michael Penix Jr. entered the season as the preseason 1st team All-Big Ten Quarterback and through the first 3 weeks of the season hasn’t lived up to those expectations.

After the Hoosiers loss to Cincinnati on Saturday, JMV wondered if Indiana should make the move to backup QB Jack Tuttle to lead the Hoosier before they reach Big Ten play. Former Indiana Linebacker Matt Surface joined JMV Wednesday to discuss if this Saturday’s game vs Western Kentucky would be a smart time to make the QB switch:

“I love Jack Tuttle but if you start him next week and what if he comes out and does amazing vs Western Kentucky? Anyone who starts against Western Kentucky should be awesome, so now you have a QB controversy? I don’t know if you want that. I think if Penix is healthy you have to let him go and try and build that confidence. If he steps up and plays like he did against Idaho, then you’re ready to go against the meat of your schedule which is Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State.”

Head Coach Tom Allen has already come out and said Penix will remain the starter for IU, however a poor outing vs Western Kentucky will only increase the noise for a change before the Big Ten slate.
