When you beat a top-10 team in the nation, typically players and coaches will relish the accomplishment and enjoy it. But for Tom Allen, Michael Penix, and the #17 Indiana Hoosiers, this is not the time to lose any steam.
That was the main takeaway after Allen dropped by The Ride with JMV on Monday following the Hoosiers 36-35 nail-biter win over #7 Penn State. The Nittany Lions had multiple opportunities to put Indiana away, but Allen’s group did not falter. It was the program’s first win over a top-10 opponent since 1987, and the first time they’ve done it at home since 1967.
“The bottom line is it’s a huge win for us, but the best is yet to come and that’s what I told the team afterwards,” Allen told JMV. “We have to keep working because we’ve got bigger goals.”
Penix’s last second lunge towards the end zone to convert the game winning two point conversion was met with criticism on if he actually got in. But all that Allen knows is it’s a ‘W’ on the schedule and Indiana is at Rutgers on Halloween. The Scarlet Knights defeated Michigan State in their Big Ten opener 38-27.
“We didn’t play well offensively until the very end but we were five-for-five in the red zone,” Allen said. “We made some mistakes. There are so many things to correct, but we have an opportunity to play much better as a team and that’s what I expect us to do moving forward”
After their matchup against Rutgers, IU will be back at home to take on Michigan in a noon game on November 7. The Wolverines were ranked #13 in this week’s AP Poll.
