Indianapolis – The Colts walked into Buffalo 5-5 as a 7 point underdog to one of the teams deemed by some as the favorite to win the Super Bowl this season. From kickoff, the Colts dominated on offense, defense, and special teams. Forcing 4 turnovers against the Bills who came into the game as the NFL leader in turnover differential, and putting up 264 rushing yards against the NFL’s #1 rush defense. As the clock struck 00:00 and the Colts improved to 6-5 on the season, many fans wondered if this was the most impressive all around effort in the Chris Ballard and Frank Reich era.

JMV tackled that question on his show Monday and started out his conversation with The Athletics’ Stephen Holder discussing that very thing:

“I think that’s probably true. The other one that comes to mind is at Arrowhead in 2019 vs the Chiefs. That game ultimately didn’t mean much with how that team finished the season. I think this team is on a different trajectory with a higher upside. One of the things the Colts haven’t done this year is play a totally clean game. Look at the difference between these two teams yesterday, the Bills made a lot of mistakes. All of the things the Colts did to themselves early in the season, the Bills did yesterday. They kind of flipped the script and when you do that you can win big games.”

One storyline in the week leading up to the game was that the Colts were looking for “revenge” after losing a game many in the building thought they should of won in Buffalo last January in the playoffs. Frank Reich did something in his postgame press conference Sunday that  Stephen Holder had never seen before:

“I like that we got some honesty from Frank Reich. He always hits us with ‘every game is the same’ and ‘don’t get too high or too low’ and those things are true but I thought he went a little off script yesterday in admitting that this game meant a little more. They knew there were doubts, they had to prove something to themselves for that matter and they did that. They put themselves in a tough situation, 1-4 is a tough place to be. To get to the playoffs they were going to have to win these big games and this kind of gets them back in the game not in terms of the standings but also in their belief of themselves.”

Frank Reich’s task doesn’t get any easier this Sunday as the defending Super Bowl champions, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town. A win puts the Colts in great playoff standing and a message to the rest of the NFL that they are legit contenders in the AFC.
