The future of the quarterback position for the Indianapolis Colts beyond Philip Rivers remains uncertain.
Rivers, the 25 million dollar man for the 2020 season, has performed well enough to lead Indianapolis to a 4-2 start. But Rivers, Chris Ballard, and Frank Reich all know that he is not the answer in terms of longevity. Jacoby Brissett is 11-19 as a starter with the Colts, and rookie Jacob Eason has not taken an NFL snap.
With that said, it begs the question. Do the Colts need to make a trade?
To discuss that possibility, longtime NFL writer and analyst “The Professor” John Clayton stopped by The Ride with JMV. Current New York Jets QB Sam Darnold was brought up as a potential trade target.
“If you’re going to be a playoff team, and you’re drafting from position 21 through 32, there’s a 75 percent failure rate,” Clayton said. “It’s hard to get a quarterback. Ideally what you want is a top 10 quarterback to draft, so it does make some sense to consider (Darnold) if Philip won’t be back.”
Darnold, whose time in New York has not gone according to plan since being drafted third overall in 2018, is currently out with a shoulder injury. He did not play on Sunday against the Dolphins, and his status for this week versus the Bills is uncertain.
The Jets are 0-6. The losses include a 36-7 defeat at the hands of the Colts in Week 2. But Darnold is still just 23-years-old with loads of potential.
Would it be worth Ballard’s time to kick the tires? The Colts must solidify the quarterback position to win a Super Bowl.
“You know Jacoby Brissett won’t be there next year,” Clayton mentioned. “Then you’re down to Jacob Eason, and if he’s not ready then it might not be a bad idea.”
After a bye this Sunday, Rivers will lead the Colts into Detroit to take a shot at win number five.
