INDIANAPOLIS – Offensive line depth was a must to be addressed in the 2020 Draft, and the Colts took a step in doing that with a local product.

With the 149th overall pick the Colts took Ball State offensive lineman Danny Pinter in Round Five.

Here are 3 takeaways on Pinter:

1. Athletic Local Product

Recruited as a tight end to Ball State (his only D1 offer), Pinter eventually put on 30 pounds and moved to right tackle for his final two seasons for the Cardinals. Pinter started at RT, but some think he’s more of an interior prospect at the next level, at 6-4 and 300 pounds, and with much shorter than average offensive linemen arms. During the NFLPA All-Star game, Pinter played guard throughout the week. Pinter is a South Bend native who was one of the most athletic testing offensive linemen at the 2020 Combine, running 4.91 in the 40-yard dash (the second fastest of any offensive linemen).

2. Guard Or Tackle?

This pick came via the Colts trading back with the Lions on Friday night. In moving up 11 spots from their original 5th round selection, the Colts are getting another high character kid who brings an athletic makeup to the reserve offensive line group. It remains to be seen just where Pinter’s best fit will be at the next level. He started at right tackle at Ball State, drilled at center during the Combine, and some think guard is his most likely long-term position in the NFL. But we know full well that reserve offensive linemen that are dressing on game day need to play multiple spots.

3. Needed, Needed OL Depth

Some fans didn’t love it, but I’ve been preaching the need for offensive line depth for the past month. The Colts do not currently have a single backup O-linemen who played an offensive snap in the NFL last season. Just ‘normal’ offensive line health for the Colts in 2020 means that a guy like Pinter could be playing (or starting) a handful of games as a rookie. Yes, the allure of Pinter growing into a starter down the road could happen, but this is a guy who is needed from Day One, being a key offensive line reserve. Could Pinter be the next Joe Haeg/Joe Reitz? The Colts would sign up for that.
