INDIANAPOLIS – Despite having a 5-2 record, and being tied atop the AFC South, the Colts elected to once again sit out the NFL trade deadline.

No buying. No selling.

While several contending AFC teams made moves over the past few days (Chiefs, Ravens, Steelers, Titans), Chris Ballard decided to sit out his third straight trade deadline.

The Colts have not executed an in-season trade since September 2013 (Trent Richardson).

As we wrote last week, the Colts choosing to not make a trade deadline move was the most likely, and wisest, scenario.

Value at the trade deadline often can lead to too much compensation being sent away for short-term rentals.

While the Colts remain in solid position to get back into the playoffs, it’s still premature to view them as a team capable of making a long January run.

Given that, and the need to maintain key draft resources next April, it made a lot of sense for the Colts to stand pat at the deadline.
