INDIANAPOLIS – The most turnover on the Colts coaching staff under Frank Reich has led to a half dozen new faces joining the staff, along with several in-house promotions.
When offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni took the head coaching job in Philadelphia, you knew the Colts would feel the domino effect.
Here’s a look at the new staff changes:
-Joe Hastings (assistant special teams coach): With Frank Ross leaving to become the special teams coordinator in Houston, Hastings is joining ST coordinator Bubba Ventrone in Indy. Hastings does not have an extensive coaching background in special teams. He has been in the college game since 2015.
-Kevin Mawae (assistant offensive line coach): Just about everyone should recognize this Hall of Famer. Mawae comes to the Colts after three seasons at Arizona State as an offensive analyst. Mawae was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019, after being a 7-time All-Pro in 16 seasons.
-Scott Milanovich (quarterbacks coach): Milanovich left his post as the head coach of the Edmonton Football Team in the CFL to take over the role previously held by Marcus Brady (the Colts new offensive coordinator). Milanovich, who has a long history in the CFL, was the Jaguars quarterbacks coach from 2017-19.
-Scottie Montgomery (running backs coach): With Tom Rathman retiring, the Colts went to the college ranks to find a new running backs coach. Montgomery was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Maryland the last two seasons. Before that he was the head coach at East Carolina from 2016-18. Montgomery played in 27 career games in the NFL.
-James Rowe (cornerbacks coach): Another collegiate find, Rowe takes over for Jonathan Gannon, who is Nick Sirianni’s defensive coordinator in Philly. Rowe, a college baseball player, was the cornerbacks’ coach at Appalachian State in 2020. Before that, he was an assistant DB coach for Washington in the NFL. Rowe coached Kenny Moore at Valdosta State.
-Press Taylor (senior offensive analyst): Taylor has plenty of familiarity with Frank Reich, with the two having worked together in Philly (2016-17). Then, Taylor was the assistant QB coach, a position he’s continued to work with for the Eagles each of the last three years.
In-house, the Colts moved Klayton Adams to tight ends coach (was the assistant offensive line coach), promoted Parks Frazier to assistant quarterbacks coach (was the offensive quality control coach), Doug McKenney to applied sports science/conditioning (was the assistant strength and conditioning coach) and David Overstreet II is the assistant defensive backs coach (was the defensive quality control coach).
