INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts will have a new backup quarterback in 2021.

With free agency officially beginning on Wednesday at 4:00 PM, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that free agent Jacoby Brissett has reached an agreement with the Dolphins on a one-year deal for reportedly $5 million guaranteed.

That news means the Colts are searching for a new backup QB to play behind Carson Wentz.

Inside the building, one definite option is Jacob Eason.

Earlier this offseason, Chris Ballard said he wasn’t sure if he was comfortable with having Eason in that role for the 2021 campaign. Eason has yet to put on an NFL jersey (in the preseason or regular season) and did not take many meaningful practice reps during his rookie campaign.

Having Eason backup Wentz though would offer the potential for the 2020 4th round pick to see valuable/needed game action, if the starter gets hurt or struggles mightily.

While thinking about such a situation might make some uneasy, it would be of value in judging the future of the talented Eason, who desperately needs a look in some game/practice action.

It is something the Colts know would be beneficial.

And the Colts still could pursue a veteran QB, although that doesn’t seem imminent. Veteran available options include the following names: Matt Barkley (Age: 31, Bills), Chase Daniel (Age: 35, Lions), Robert Griffin III (Age: 31, Ravens), A.J. McCarron (Age: 30, Texans).

Brissett, a West Palm Beach native, going to the Dolphins makes a whole lot of sense. He will backup young QB Tua Tagovailoa and play for head coach Brian Flores, who was with Brissett in New England. Flores wasn’t afraid to pull Tua last season, so there’s a better chance for Brissett to play there than other stops.

The loss of Brissett does mean the Colts will need to look into different short-yardage options.

Wentz is a guy that Frank Reich has loved in QB sneak situations and the ability to use more read/option looks in 2021 will definitely be in the Colts’ plan this season.

The Colts are now down to 13 in-house free agents after the reported deals for Denico Autry (Titans) and Brissett (Dolphins).
