INDIANAPOLISIn front of a sold-out Grand Park of more than 6,000 fans on Sunday, the Colts had their final weekend practice of camp.

The offense had a sloppy afternoon of work with the Colts returning from two days off, and putting the full pads on for the third time in Westfield.

Here is what was learned at Sunday’s seventh practice of camp:

  • Matt Ryan finished Sunday afternoon 11-of-18 with completions to the following guys: Kylen Granson (2), Michael Pittman (2), Jonathan Taylor (2), Mo Alie-Cox, Parris Campbell, Drew Ogletree, Ashton Dulin, Nyheim Hines. It was easily the sloppiest day of camp for the offense. Drops, pre-snap miscues, poor timing and errant ball placement were among the issues plaguing the unit. You could count at least a half dozen drops, with Jelani Woods, Parris Campbell, Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines, Kylen Granson and Keke Coutee all having ball security problems. Frank Reich pointed out that he thinks the Colts had as many drops on Sunday as they had in the previous 6 practices combined. Through 7 practices, Ryan is 56-of-80 in the full teamwork. Ryan’s completed his passes to the following guys: Michael Pittman (14), Mo Alie-Cox (8) Kylen Granson (8), Jonathan Taylor (7), Nyheim Hines (6), Parris Campbell (5), Drew Ogletree (3), Alec Pierce (2), Ashton Dulin (2), Dezmon Patmon (1).

  • What a beautiful afternoon of practice from Stephon Gilmore. While Gilmore isn’t thrown at much, he made the most of an early target his way in the first 7-on-7 period. Gilmore jumped a ball intended for Parris Campbell near the sideline and picked off Matt Ryan. It was just the 3rd INT by any Colts quarterback this camp, and Ryan’s first since the first day of camp. Both Frank Reich and Matt Ryan had some strong compliments for Gilmore after practice. “From a quarterback’s perspective, he’s the kind of cornerback you fear,” Reich said of Gilmore. “The way he sees the game, he knows what’s coming before it’s coming. He’s so quick to recognize routes, concepts and then he has the ability make plays on the ball and turn it over Love the player. Love the person. Really feels he’s helping our team and our secondary..” Ryan added that Gilmore’s presence provides a ‘seed of doubt’ into a quarterback’s mind.

  • Matt Ryan, going into his 15th NFL season at the age of 37, is someone that would like to play in the preseason. Ryan wasn’t adamant about needing extensive work in the team’s three preseason games, but his history in the NFL shows a guy who likes to play in August. While Ryan didn’t play in last year’s preseason, these are his pass attempt numbers in the preseason during the 2016-19 seasons: 37, 20 (coming off an MVP season), 20 and 28. Does Ryan get a series or two in the preseason opener on Saturday, and then a little more run in the preseason finale on August 27th? Based off Frank Reich’s preseason playing time comments over the weekend, it sounds like the Colts would like to increase the starters playing time in August, but not by much.

  • An important sign for any rookie is when that player starts to stack positive days together. That’s happening for 6th round pick Drew Ogletree. Frank Reich said following Sunday’s practice that it seems like Ogletree walked into camp knowing what he was doing right away. It’s been seen with more and more starting reps for the Findlay prospect.

  • Always fun to see the variety of highlights during 1-on-1 drills. Here are some from Sunday: Stephon Gilmore with textbook coverage and a pass deflection on Michael Pittman; Matt Ryan poorly places a ball that Parris Campbell can’t secure over the middle; Dezmon Patmon hauls in a deep ball from Nick Foles; despite Mo Alie-Cox boxing out Nick Cross, the rookie goes over the top for the clean breakaway; Isaiah Rodgers picks off Nick Foles with terrific coverage on Nyhiem Hines; Michael Pittman finds perfect timing with Matt Ryan in bouncing back against Stephon Gilmore, Parris Campbell gets the best of Kenny Moore; Chris Wilcox records an INT of Nick Foles.

  • Hat tip to Matt Pryor for two really strong 1-on-1 reps against the speedy Yannick Ngakoue. Pryor again continues to take every single starting left tackle rep.

  • It’s been a pretty quiet camp for rookie Jelani Woods. But Frank Reich seems optimistic. “I think you are seeing more and more from him every day,” Reich said of the 3rd round pick. “You can tell he’s getting more comfortable with the offense. He’s playing faster and faster. You can see big, long, speed. The ball is not always going to him but really excited about the upside he brings. And then I’m excited about what he’s doing as a blocker. He’s getting better there. It means something to him.” Personally, I’d put rookie Drew Ogletree ahead of Woods on the depth chart right now.

  • Now in Week 2 of training camp, Ashton Dulin is starting to make it a routine thing in recording a big play. On Sunday, Dulin’s deep ball TD came in a 7-on-7 drill from Nick Foles.

  • The second-team defensive line frequently handles the second-team offensive line. And to an extent, that’s to be expected when you have former draft picks Tyquan Lewis, Dayo Odeyingbo, Ben Banogu, Eric Johnson and Curtis Brooks across that unit.

  • Here is how the starting offense looked on Sunday: QB-Matt Ryan, RB-Jonathan Taylor, WR-Michael Pittman, WR-Parris Campbell, TE-Drew Ogletree, TE-Mo Alie-Cox, LT-Matt Pryor, LG-Quenton Nelson, C-Ryan Kelly, RG-Danny Pinter, RT-Braden Smith.

  • Here is how the starting defense looked on Sunday: DE-Yannick Ngakoue, DT-Grover Stewart, DT-DeForest Buckner, DE-Kwity Paye, LB-E.J. Speed, LB-Zaire Franklin, LB-Bobby Okereke, CB-Kenny Moore, CB-Stephon Gilmore, S-Julian Blackmon, S-Nick Cross.

  • Guys that stood out at Sunday’s practice for a variety of reasons: LB-JoJo Domann, CB-Stephon Gilmore, CB-Anthony Chesley, LB-James Skalski, LT-Matt Pryor

Injury Report: The following players remain on the PUP or non-football injury list: LB-Shaquille Leonard (knee), WR-Mike Strachan (knee).
