The Panthers and veteran tight end Greg Olsen have “mutually agreed to part ways”.
Olsen was drafted by the Bears in 2007, but has spent the rest of his career in Carolina to this point.
Chris Ballard mentioned in his post-season presser that this team is missing some veteran voices. So will Eric Ebron not coming back and the need of more veteran leadership in the locker room cause the Colts to go after Olsen?
Stephen Holder of The Athletic discussed that possibility on Wednesday’s Fan Morning Show.
“I don’t know if he’s got that kind of upside to him. Certainly it’s no upside when you’re 34, I mean you are what you are. I like Greg Olsen. I don’t know if he’s the right fit for them. I really think they have a good tight end room. I think they need a young guy with an Ebron type skillset right now. I think that’s a need you fill through the draft,” Holder told Jeff & Big Joe.
That’s perfect because there are quite a few really good tight ends coming out this year.
Randy Moss’ son and 2019 national champion, Thad Moss, is set to be a top pick.
They could stay local with Purdue product Brycen Hopkins who is big, athletic, and can cause matchup problems similar to Ebron.
Another reason why Olsen wouldn’t make the most sense? Money.
“I don’t know at this point what Greg Olsen is going to make, but it’s probably going to be more than a second or third or fourth round draft pick. So I think for all those reasons I just think you can bring a guy in who will be on your team for at least four years if you do it right. Then choose to re-sign him or not re-sign him, but I mean you’ve got a guy in the building for very little money for a long time.”
Luckily, as Holder mentioned, the tight end room is already a good one. Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox are a good group with upside especially when talking about Mo.
Tight end doesn’t have to be top priority, but it would be nice to be able to make the “good” tight end room go to great with a potentially lethal draft pick.
