NEW YORK — Federal charges are being filed in New York against more than a dozen former NBA players in an alleged health insurance fraud scheme.
NBC News first reported that the indictment includes conspiracy to commit health care and wire fraud charges involves the NBA health plan.
Some of the 18 players include Terrence Williams who once played for the former New Jersey Nets and six-time NBA All-Defensive Team member Tony Allen, who mainly played for the Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies. Allen’s wife has also been charged as a part of the conspiracy.
Also on the list is former Indiana Pacers player CJ Watson. Watson played for the Pacers from 2013 to 2015.
The group is said to have committed fraud for a total of $4 million in the form of filing fake claims for medical or dental procedures through the NBA’s health care plan.
According to the Washington Post, “The scheme was carried out from at least 2017 to 2020 when the plan received false claims totaling about $3.9 million.”
