FISHERS, Ind.–There were two baseball players from Indiana selected in the first round of Sunday night’s Major League Baseball Draft.

Sam Bachman is from Fishers and attended Hamilton Southeastern High School. After that, he went to Miami University in Ohio where he became an integral part of the team’s pitching rotation.

Bachman was selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 9th overall pick.

Most recently in his junior season, he went 4-4 with a 1.81 ERA. Bachman had 93 strikeouts and was named first-team All-MAC.

“I trained with some freak athletes. There are people coming in from every class that are going to be in the same place shoes that I’m in one day. I think baseball is pretty special in Indiana and I think that’ll keep going,” said Bachman in a Zoom press conference after he was selected.

Bachman is the first player from Miami University to be selected in the first round of the Draft, and he is the highest overall selection by the Angels since they took Troy Glaus with the No. 3 overall pick in the 1997 Draft. His ERA was the seventh-best among NCAA Division I pitchers, and he has a fastball that can reach 100 mph.

The other player from Indiana to be selected in the first round was Colson Montgomery. Montgomery was selected by the Chicago White Sox with the 22nd overall pick. He was raised in Holland and attended Southridge High School in Huntingburg. While there, he played football, basketball, and baseball.

Montgomery is a 19-year-old left-handed hitter who is committed to Indiana University. He is also the all-time leading scorer for the Southridge High School boys basketball program.

During his senior baseball season, he batted .333 with seven home runs, had 23 RBIs, and stole 24 bases. Montgomery helped lead Southridge to their first-ever IHSAA state championship.

The state with the most first-round picks this year was California, with five. Georgia was next with three, followed by Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas with two each.
