ELKHART LAKE, Wisc. — Felix Rosenqvist has still not been cleared by IndyCar medical personnel to drive after his nasty crash in Detroit last weekend.

Arrow McLaren SP is in need of a replacement driver for Rosenqvist. They had Oliver Askew step in for Rosenqvist in Race 2 at Belle Isle, but with Askew now in the employ of Ed Carpenter Racing to sub in for Rinus Veekay, who broke his clavicle this week, they have to look elsewhere.

Wednesday it was announced that Arrow McLaren SP has asked former Formula 1 and current Chip Ganassi sports car driver Kevin Magnussen to step in.

This means Magnussen, who is from Denmark, will be making his IndyCar debut much earlier than anticipated.

Magnussen was on hand when Rosenqvist slammed into the wall at the Belle Isle street course. He won his first IMSA Sports Car race last weekend at the track for Cadillac Chip Ganassi Racing with co-driver Renger van der Zande.

IMSA was there as part of a doubleheader event with IndyCar.

Magnussen has a history with McLaren having made 19 starts for the McLaren Formula 1 team in 2014, including a career-best finish of second at the Australian Grand Prix that year. He spent his last five years in F1 with the Haas F1 Team alongside Romain Grosjean.

Grosjean is now racing for Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing in the NTT IndyCar Series, meaning the two drivers will be facing each other for the first time on a race track since the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix in 2020.
