INDIANAPOLIS – We are about a month and a half away from NFL free agency beginning.

Over the next few weeks, you will start to see some teams take care of unrestricted free agents that they want to bring back.

For the Colts, they have 12 unrestricted free agents, with not a lot of guarantees on who to definitely bring back.

Clayton Geathers Free Agent Watch

If Clayton Geathers returns to the Colts in 2020, he will become the franchise’s first defensive player to sign three contracts with the team since Robert Mathis.

Just because Geathers might return to Indy next year doesn’t mean he will be a starter.

In fact, it didn’t take long into the 2019 season for Khari Willis to take Geathers’ place in the starting lineup.

Injuries all over the safety position did lead to Geathers starting 10 games in 2019. But when everyone was healthy at safety, Geathers saw his normal role significantly shrink.

Geathers, 27, did achieve his main goal in 2019 of staying healthy. He played in 15 of 16 games, after he had missed 22 games in the three previous years.

Chris Ballard has been outspoken in the professionalism that Geathers brings. Geathers has been a frequent captain for the Colts.

From a strictly playing time standpoint, Geathers is probably replaceable though.

But you can’t discredit how the staff views the leadership intangible from Geathers.

Is that enough for him to earn yet another contract with the Colts, even though he would likely be brought back as a reserve?

Or does Geathers feel revived after a healthy 2019 campaign and think he can compete for a starting job somewhere else?
