INDIANAPOLIS – The need to take two wide receivers in the 2020 Draft came to fruition for the Colts.
With the 212th overall pick on Day 3, the Colts selected Washington State wide receiver Dezmon Patmon in Round Six.
Here are 3 takeaways on Patmon:
1. Who Is Patmon?
In my final Mock Draft for the Colts, I had them taking two 6-4 wideouts, who both weighed more than 200 pounds. Well, that body type at receiver was chosen twice by the Colts. At 6-4 and 225 pounds, Dezmon Patmon is a very big body wideout, who also ran 4.48 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine. Patmon has massive hands and has shown the ability to snare passes out of his catch radius. More than a handful of drops stained his 58-catch season though last year. Some choppy route running was something Patmon admits needs work. Patmon only made 12 starts in his entire collegiate career, rotating in for around half of the offensive snaps at Wazzu. He finished his career with 1,976 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns. Patmon actually worked out with Michael Pittman earlier in the draft process.
2. Depth Was Needed
Entering the 2020 Draft, the Colts had 7 selections and many felt the need was there for two picks at the wide receiver position. While a guy like Pittman obviously has a much better chance at making the immediate impact, the Colts needed to get a few more drafted receivers into that room. T.Y. Hilton turns 31 years old in November. And, entering the draft, Parris Campbell was the only receiver under contract past the 2020 season. A wideout view for 2020 (Pittman), and beyond (Pittman, and possibly Patmon), was something the Colts focused on in this draft. A San Diego native, Patmon now could be catching passes from Philip Rivers, who led the Chargers for many years in that area.
3. How To Make The Team?
Right now, you have to think the Colts have 4 wideouts that should feel very good about making the roster: T.Y. Hilton, Parris Campbell, Zach Pascal, Michael Pittman. After that, it’s very much up in the air how the team fills a 5th, and possibly 6th, wideout spot. You have guys like Marcus Johnson, Reece Fountain, Ashton Dulin and Steve Ishmael in the mix for sure, along with Patmon. For Patmon to make the team, establishing himself as a 50/50 ball catcher, especially in the red zone, would be huge. And, of course, a special teams presence will be necessary for any back end of the roster wideout.
